The Hajr-e-Aswad (Arabic: الحجر الأسود, al-Ḥajar al-Aswad, “Black Stone”) is a sacred, dark-colored stone embedded in the southeastern corner of the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
- Appearance: Despite its name, the stone is a dark, polished, reddish-black, or reddish-brown rock, polished over centuries by the hands of pilgrims.
- Composition: It is believed by some to be a meteorite, though this is not definitively proven.
- Encasing: These pieces are held together within a silver frame (encasement) placed on the exterior of the Kaaba.
- Prophetic Connection: Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) is recorded to have kissed the stone, and Muslims emulate this action as a Sunnah (practice of the Prophet).
- Origins: According to Islamic tradition, the stone was sent down from Jannah (Paradise) to Earth by Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) to Prophet Ibrahim (AS) for placement in the Kaaba
